Castellers de Barcelona

Eduard Paris

“In some ways we are representing the people of Catalonia.”

Castells, a Catalonian word meaning ‘castles’, are a cultural phenomenon particular to Catalonia. Originating from games held in Valls, Tarragona at the end of the 18th century, rival teams called colles battle it out to see who can build the biggest human tower by standing on each other’s shoulders. Founded in 1969, The Castellers de Barcelona might not be the oldest castelling group in Catalonia, but they are the most successful group the city has produced since the 19th century. We met Eduard Paris at one of the group’s practices to find out how you go about making human castles.
