Project leader at Archelon Turtle Conservation Trust

SYLVAN BENAKSAS

“I get to live in a paradise for half a year, doing something I love.”

An unremarkable field just outside the village of Kalliteros isn’t the first place you’d think of when it comes to finding a turtle conservation project, but it’s exactly the place Archelon’s Zakynthos operation has chosen for its nerve centre. There, under the olive trees, is an organisation dedicated to protecting the nesting sites of the rare Loggerhead Turtle. Back from a day checking for new nests, we met project leader Sylvan as the sun set over the National Marine Park, 135 square kilometres of coastline set aside to preserve these precious nesting sites.
